Los Arcos to LoGrono

Once again the Brierley guide book was correct. "Fill up you water bottles and wear a hat!" It was another long hot day. If the scenery is great, I don't seem to notice the heat but when we start walking by highways and the industrial outskirts of town then the heat gets to me. After 18.6 km we sat down in a dingy cafe in Viana and decided that there were no rewards for being martyrs.

The entrance to Logrono was pleasant. The historic centre is nice. Deirdre and Christine were walking in and looking for the Municipal Alberge when they saw a sign that was partially covered by a tree "Municipal . . . " and they thought they had reached their destination only to read "municipal crematorium" and thought "we are only half dead.' I guess that tells you what kind of day it was.

The alberge had a nice courtyard with a foot bath. It was a square pond filled with very cold water and a fountain and it felt delicious on the weary feet! The alberge was clean enough but poorly designed. The top bunks were separated from the next row by a six inch strip of wood. Too close for comfort. There was a snotty group of girls ( and one creepy guy) who thought they could talk and cavort into the night. The positive side if this was getting up and going out onto the balcony and finding that the storks were nesting in the church tower across the way. One stork was standing guard while two others fluttered about in the moonlight. Normally the storks migrate around July 25th, the Feast of Santiago, so we were lucky to see them.
